Superhero of the Month – Mike Winget

Mike Winget is a quiet presence at Mo-Mentum Fitness.  Most days you will find him training with Adrian in the early morning while listening to country music.   He first started started working out at Mo-Mentum Fitness at the suggestion of his wife, the lovely Kari Burke because although he was spending a lot of time at the gym, his training sessions were ineffective and the repetitive nature of his workouts were doing damage to his joints to the point that he might have needed surgery.  Kari connected him with Adrian and he began seeing results immediately and surgery was no longer needed.

Mike’s training at Mo-Mentum allows him to pursue his passions including hiking, boating, flying without any problems. He has no plans on stopping which makes him superhero material!

Q & A

Describe what your life (and your health) was like before fitness.
I come from a heavy family and have always had to watch my weight. Usually that was with tough but intermittent diets. I had a wide range of about 175 through 210 pounds. Around 1983 when I moved to California, I added a very rigorous, but self directed fitness program with running and weight lifting.

Was there ever a low point or an experience that made your priorities change?
The key was 1983 when I started a new company in California under very stressful conditions. At one point I ended up in the emergency room, to heavy, stressed out and thinking I had a heart issue. That was the real turning point. so I dropped the weight and started working out way in excess. I got down to 163 at one point…very unbalanced.

How did fitness come into your life (or back into your life)?
The second stage to #2 above was a training gift to Momentum fitness from my ever smart as can be wife Kari. She realized (I did not) that I was working out on my own like crazy, but getting marginal results. I hit the jackpot when she set me up with Adrian at MF. He has been a Godsend, and really turned things around for me.

What kind of results have you seen since starting a regular fitness program?
I think a big change is general well being. My previous work outs were specific focus, and way to repetitive . Same routine over and over. I hit a pinnacle with no further improvement even though I worked out diligently. I was damaging certain parts of my body, like knees and especially rotator cuffs. I though I was headed towards rotator cuff surgery , but Adrian, with his extensive physiology knowledge and ever the magician at extracting everything you have , focused on that problem and I have seen a major improvement with no need for surgery. Thats a major win win for me.

Please talk more about the actual changes in your life? (weight loss, confidence, more endurance, less medications etc)
The most important thing I notice, is that I can do just about anything I want to. Of course my age presents some limitations in outright strength/joints, but generally I am not being restricted strength, and endurance wise.

What kind of changes have you seen there? What do these changes mean for your lifestyle, longevity, finances, etc?
Happy Happy Happy…says it all….

Why do you make fitness a priority in your life?
Because I am extremely active all the time. Besides extensive international travel, my general life style includes a huge range of physical activities such as Scuba, aggressive hiking, boating, flying…you name it, we do it. I work out to live.. I can pretty much do anything I want as a result of Adrian’s wide cover training. I can hang upside down fixing something in the engine room of our boat, or climbing into an awkward cockpit of a aerobatic plane…without any problem. No restrictions…that makes me very happy..ease of living…thats what its all about for me.

These days, what makes you truly happy and feel at peace?
Great health, and the love of my wife and family!

How do you feel compared to 1 year ago?
1000 times better!

Specifics: age? job title? children? spouse?
68, retired 2013 – CEO of a large international Energy trading company, 4 kids, 5 grandkids, and super supportive/best spouse ever-Kari.
